What is a web host and why is it important? Well, a web host is a company that owns plenty of webservers that operate all of the time. As a website owner, you need a web hosting company so that you can rent a space on their servers and so that your website will be ‘hosted’ and be accessible online. So long as their servers are running, your website should be accessible all of the time.
That being said, there are so many things that you want to consider before choosing one. So today, I am going to go over those factors so that you will always get your money’s worth. Here are some tips to help you choose the best hosting provider for you:
The Hosting Plan
When you are looking for a hosting provider, you might come across terms such as ‘shared’, ‘VPS’, or ‘dedicated’. All of these terms just refer to the hosting plans that they provide to their customers.
Basically, the most affordable hosting plan is a shared hosting plan wherein your website will be placed in a single server along with many other websites. This is ideal for people that just own a personal blog or website and bandwidth is not really a huge issue.
VPS hosting is a step above shared hosting in that although you are still lumped inside the same server as others, you will be given your own dedicated resources with the use of a virtualization program. This is a bit more expensive, but is still considered affordable.
Dedicated hosting is, well, the clue is in its name. Whereas in shared and VPS hosting plans where you get to share the same server with others, you will be given your own dedicated server which means that you essentially your own server computer. Because of this, the said hosting plan is also the most expensive (and I am talking thousands of dollars per month).
Since you are going to partner up with a web hosting company for the long-term, it is best that you get one that has a very good reputation, particularly in the service and reliability department.
Go with one that has an impeccable customer support and one that always has a good server reliability score.
Do you know how to manage your web hosting company’s platform? Do you know how to use cPanel or other management software? If you do not know, your web hosting company should be able to walk you through the necessary steps to successfully operate any confusing software related to their service and your website.
Speed is King
For those of you who do not know, your web host is responsible for the bigger percentage of website speeds. So, if your website is slow to load, you will have your web host to blame for that.
That being said, you should opt for a provider that is known for having fast and reliable servers. You do not want your users to wait for your webpage to load, right?
Don’t Fall for ‘Cheap’ Providers
The web hosting landscape is as competitive as it’s ever been and companies will try to woo new customers into their service by offering cheap hosting plans.
Now, do not instantly fall for this until you’ve done your own research. Do keep in mind that ‘cheap’ is not necessarily the same as ‘affordable’ because the former just happens to be the most inexpensive and the latter is what I would consider the most ‘bang-for- your-buck’.
